Mumbai: Sanjay Nirupam begins fast
Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam on Thursday began his indefinite fast in front of Reliance Energy Divisional Office in Mumbai demanding a cut in power tariff in the city.
"If the Delhi government can slash power rates, why can't it be done in Mumbai as well? There is a nexus between Reliance and the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission, which has to be probed," said Nirupam.
In what is seen as an impact of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)'s success in Delhi over its sustained stir on the electricity prices, the Congress-led Maharashtra government on Jan 20 slashed the power tariff by up to 20 percent in the state though it is not effective in Mumbai.
The state cabinet announced the decision.
A protest demanding reduction of the rates was earlier led by Congress MPs like Sanjay Nirupam and Priya Dutt.
The two Congress leaders had let a protest recently outside the office of Reliance Energy company that supplies power in their constituencies.
While Nirupam is an MP from Mumbai North, Dutt represents the North West constituency in Mumbai.
However, the Maharashtra Cabinet announced the reduction in prices across agriculture industry and domestic consumers.
The decision followed a report by Maharashtra Industries Minister Narayan Rane who led a group of ministers (GoM) on the issue.
