Bishops' appeal to Christians to back secular leaders
Close on the heels of the appeal to Muslims to oppose communal parties in the Lok Sabha elections by Jama Masjid Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari, several archbishops, Bishops and heads of Catholic and Protestant churches in Andhra Pradesh have urged Christians not to vote for 'communal forces' in the polls.
In an unprecedented move,a pastoral letter signed by Bishop G Dyvasirvadam, moderator of the church of south India (CSI), the Andhra Pradesh Federation of Churches appealed to Christians to 'elect leaders who are close to people and their needs, and for those who uphold secular character and promote communal harmony'.
The letter, also signed by Archbishop of Hyderabad Thumma Bala, was sent to members of all Churches in the state to be read on a Sunday before the elections.
