In a major setback to Punjab Revenue Minister and Youth Akali Dal (YAD) president Bikram Singh Majithia, YAD general secretary Mandeep Singh Manna today joined the Congress along with hundreds of his supporters.

He was inducted into the Congress by former Chief Minister and Congress candidate from Amritsar Capt Amarinder Singh in presence of several senior party leaders and workers.

In an informal conversation with reporters after joining the Congress, Mr Manna said they were impressed with the leadership qualities of Capt Amarinder and pointed out that he was a strong leader with decision making ability. They said his record was unparalleled when it came to watching the interests of the state or the country.

The youth leader maintained that there was a subtle undercurrent among the Akali workers that they wanted to vote for Capt Amarinder. They said they had noticed that people of Amritsar were not prepared to accept an outsider as their representative.

Moreover, they said, they were also feeling bad over the way Akali leadership, particularly Bikram Majithia, treated Navjot Singh Sidhu who was a well meaning person and leader.

Welcoming the youth Akali Dal leaders into the Congress, Capt Amarinder hoped that their induction will strengthen the party further. He said he has been receiving regular calls and good wishes from Akali workers for his victory from Amritsar.

The state will go to polls in single phase on April 30.
