In a pall of gloom amid sounds of slogans like 'Kankanwadi Amar Rahe', the last rites of Naik Subedar Ravindra Irrappa Kankanwadi, who was killed along with three other jawans, was perfomed this morning with full state of honour at his native place Aralgundi village, in Gadhinglaj tehsil of this district.

In an overnight gunbattle between security and army personel and terrorist at Zunrishi village of Kupwara district in Srinagar, martyr Mr Kankanwadi was killed on the spot when a bullet penetrated from his shoulder early Tuesday. He was on patrolling duty on Pakistan-India border when the incident occurred. Three security jawans were also killed in this incident.

Martyr Kankanwadi's body, which had arrived by a special air force plan on Lohgaon airport in Pune last night, was later taken to his native place Aralgundi village by road, which arrived here early this morning.

In Aralgundi village, thousands of people, who were waiting for the body to arrive, began shouting out slogans like 'Kankanwadi Amar Rahe'

The slogans continued even after arrival of the dead body, which was later kept at his home for the last 'Darshan' for his family members and relatives of Kankanwadi.

After the last religious rites were performed in the presence of large number of people, full state of honour with fired rounds was given to the martyr jointly by police and Maratha Light Battalion.

Kankanwadi's ten-year-old son Gautam and his father Irrappa gave the lite to the departed soul at 0805 hrs at a ground near his house.

Minister of State for Home Satej Patil, Sandhyadevi Kupekar, MLA, Malojiraje, former MLA, Rajaram Mane, District Collector, Dr Manojkumar Sharma, District Superintendent of Police, Vivek Agvane,Regional officer, Hanmantrao Patil, Gadhinglaj Tehsildar and top officers from army and police were present for the funeral.

Labor Minister Hasan Mushrif met the family members of Kankanwadi last night and condoled them.

Mr Mushrif also announced Rs 2 lakh as financial help to family members on behalf of 'Mushrif foundation'.
