Modi might foment violence between Muslims and Hindus: Rahul
In a personalised attack on the BJP's prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi, Congress vice-chief Rahul Gandhi today said the Gujarat Chief Minister could go to any extent to become the Premier and might divide the country and incite strife between Hindus and Muslims.
"As per BJP propaganda, Mr Modi knows everything and he is the only person who can alter the face of Hindustan," he said while addressing an election rally in Balod within Kanker (Scheduled Tribes) parliamentary constituency. This was the second visit of the Congress star campaigner to insurgency-affected Bastar Division.
Lambasting Mr Modi for wishing to be a chowkidar (watchman) for checking corruption, Mr Gandhi said, "You can ask (ex-deputy prime minister Lal Krishna Advani and (former Union minister) Jaswant Singh how chowkidari is done in their party. Unlike the BJP, the Congress believes that the country need crores of chowkidars and not one chowkidar. The BJP favours making one person all-powerful."
Claiming that Congressmen consider themselves as servants of the people and are ready to take the public's orders with humility, he said, "Come what may, the party is committed to empower the poor, tribal folk, women and other weaker sections of society with the Right to Food, Health, Housing and other welfare measures."
The Congress Vice-President said that the BJP is attempting to create a wave similar to the 'India Shining' campaign during the 2004 and 2009 general elections. If the BJP comes to power at the Centre, only a handful of persons would be benefitted as farmers and the impoverished poor are never in the party's priority list.
Referring to the recently-promulgated Food Security Act, he asserted that nobody would be left hungry and added that the United Progressive Alliance regime waived peasants' loans amounting to Rs 70,000 crore despite stiff opposition by the BJP.
Mr Gandhi hit out at the saffron party for targeting persons hailing from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and residing in Maharashtra and alleged that the party was behind the Gujarat and Muzaffarnagar riots.
