Ending the day-long uncertainty, the Mamata Banerjee government today accepted the Election Commission's order for the transfer of five Superintendents of Police, one District Magistrate and two Additional District Magistrates in West Bengal.

Announcing this at a news conference here, Ms Banerjee said a letter in this respect would be sent to the EC tomorrow.

She, however, said all the transferred officials would be brought back once the elections were over.

''We accept the EC's order. However, we will bring back with full honour all these officers to their original posting after the elections,'' she said.

Her announcement comes after day-long speculations over the
fallout of her refusal to accept the EC order, which she had openly challenged triggering the fear of a constitutional crisis.

The EC had earlier said it could go for cancelling or postponing Lok Sabha polls in the constituencies concerned if its order was not carried out.
