West Bengal Pradesh Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury today alleged that the Trinamool Congress candidate from Jangipur constituency was distributing money among voters and pandering to communal sentiments.

The Trinamool candidate Haji Nurul Islam, however, denied the allegations.

"He is not only distributing money to buy votes, he is also trying to communally destabilise Jangipur. We will approach the Election Commission with a formal complaint," Mr Chowdhury said.

Jangipur is in Murshidabad district, which is said to be the forte of Mr Chowdhury as well as the Congress.

The Congress candidate from Jangipur is Abhijit Mukherjee, son of President Pranab Mukherjee.

Mr Islam has been caught on tape distributing Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes among the people during a party rally at Sagardighi in Murshidabad on Monday.

He, however brushed aside the allegations and claimed that the video broadcast by several vernacular news channels as 'doctored'.

"The allegations are baseless, I have not distributed any money. The video is doctored and has been put up by my rivals to malign me," he said.
