Ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, sleuths of the Crime Branch unit of Thane (rural) police today arrested two people for allegedly possessing a firearm in Nallasopara area of the neighbouring Thane district.

The accused were found to be in possession of a country-made revolver and two live cartridges.

Acting on a tip-off, a Crime Branch sleuths team laid a trap and arrested the duo who was loitering around suspiciously under the fly-over bridge near Sai Krupa Hotel.

The arrested have been identified as Umruddin Kurshid Hawari (19) and Roshan Vimal Jha (21), the duo are suspected to be members of an inter-state arms dealers' gang.

"We are trying to find out the source of the firearm and to whom it was meant to be supplied," police said.

A case under the relevant sections of the Arms Act has been registered against the accused who have been remanded to police custody for a week, sources added.
