Capt Amarinder for martyr status to Kalianawala Khu victims
Senior Congress leader Capt Amarinder Singh today favoured granting the martyr status to all the victims of the Kalianawala Khu besides performing their last rites with full military honours.
He also sought an apology from BJP candidate Arun Jaitley for his controversial derogatory remarks against the soldiers.
In an informal conversation with reporters before addressing a public meeting organised by party incharge Harpartap Ajnala here today, Capt Amarinder said, since the nation had recognised 1857 as the First War of Independence, those killed in the Kalianawala Khu, who participated in the uprising against the British deserve to be granted the status of martyrs.
He also said their last rites should be performed with full military honours.
About constructing a memorial, he reiterated that apparently the soldiers belonged to Hindu religion and were from Uttar Pradesh as they all belonged to 26 Native Infantry. He said a temple could be built in their memory.
He lauded the efforts of the local members of the Gurdwara including Amarjit Singh Sarkaria and Kabul Singh for bringing out this historic fact before the nation. He promised to extend all support for setting up the memorial for the martyrs.
Later addressing a public rally, Capt Amarinder lashed out at the Akali-BJP alliance for failing all the sections whether these were employees, the farmers, the youth or anybody else. He said the farmers were not getting even two hours of regular power supply against the promised 8 hours. Nor were their crops being lifted on time.
Questioning the commitment of BJP candidate Arun Jaitely towards Amritsar, he said he was not even remotely concerned with the area. He also referred to his controversial derogatory remarks about the soldiers. He asked Mr Jaitley to tender an unconditional apology or face protest.
He pointed out that the PCC Ex-Servicemen League had already raised the matter two days ago asking Jaitley to apologise.
"He neither denied his remarks nor tendered apology", he said, while adding, this speaks of absolute arrogance and lack of respect for the servicemen.
