Naveen Patnaik came to politics in 1997 only after the demise of his father Biju Patnaik and since then he has been carrying the legacy of his father singlehandedly spearheading the victory of Biju Janata Dal in Odisha since 2000.

During this long 17 years, he has established his supremacy over the party named after his father and all set to create a new record to capture power for the fourth consecutive time, a thing which will be difficult to establish by any political party in the state in future.

He entered into the active politics in the Lok Sabha by election for the first time as the son of his father, a popular household name in Odisha but today he has created his own image to spearhead the party to a stupendous victory as a crusader fighting for the cause of the people of Odisha despite the BJD government embroiled in several scams in the past few years.

Mr Patnaik is in the fray from Hinjli, an Assembly segment of the Aska parliamentary constituency, which his father, the legendary Biju Patnaik had represented in Parliament once.

He defeated his opponent Uday Nath Nayak of Congress in 2000 Assembly elections by a margin of 26,417 votes and again in 2004 by a margin of 42,642 votes. During the previous Asembly election in 2009, he won the seat and scored a hat-trick with a margin of 60,786 votes in a triangular contest.

This time though he is pitted against candidates of six political parties besides an independent in a eight cornered contest but it will be a forgone conclusion of his victory as he still carries the legacy of his father, who was seven-time MLA of Hinjli from 1957 to 1980.

However, political observers said his winning margin might be declined as the Left parties are no more with him and he has to face the candidates belonging to Congress, BJP, AITC, Aam Adimi Party(AAP), Ama Odisha Party, a new regional outfit, Samata Kranti, also another regional party floated by former BJD leader and former Union Minister Braja Kishore Tripathy.
