A goof up by the postal department of opening a joint account of a couple under the Public Provident Fund Scheme has cost the department a whooping sum of Rs 3 lakh.

The Thane District Consumer Redressal Forum in its order issued last week has taken a strong exception to the casual attitude of the department personnel in dealing with the matter and asked the department to pay a total compensation of Rs 3 lakh within 60 days of issue of the order, failing which an additional sum of Rs 50,000 would have to paid as penalty.

It also ordered the department to complete all the formalities of closure of the account within 30 days.

Forum president Umesh Jhavalikar and Member N D Kadam in their order stated that the respondents (Department of Posts, SS of Post Office, Sub-Post Master, Mohane) had not not apprised the complainants Satish Shankar Sable and his wife Sunita of the provisions of the PPF regulations and permitted them to open joint account and had not made efforts to rectify the mistake in the last 13 years.
