With the arrest of a villager from the jungles, rural police today finally solved the a 12-year-old murder case in the district.


DSP Thane Rural Rajesh Pradhan said that he had directed the police force to keep a vigil and solve the old pending cases during the combing operations for the current Lok Sabha elections.

Accordingly, a team of police personnel combed the jungles in Vikramgadh taluka and hit upon a murder accused, who was on the run for the last 12 years, police said.

Mr Khairnar told to reporters that it was on December 18, 2002, at about 2000 hours that a group of villagers brutally attacked one Sadanand Tanha Garel, of Palsai in Vasai taluka with sickle and iron rods and killed him.

According to the complaint given by the victim's wife, Kalawati S Garel, 45, her son who was lunatic, had kicked on the door of one of their relatives.

Annoyed over the act of the boy the villagers Vilas Dattu Dabke, 23, of Palsai, Sadanand Mahadu Karpat, 27, Kalbhon-Khairipada, Vasai, and Devnath Ladkya Urade, 38, of Bhavarpada in Vikramgadh had fatally attacked the victim, who died on the spot.

Immediately after the incident,police arrested Dabke and Kharpt while Urade fled from there and was not tracable for the last 12 years.

Finally this week, he was arrested by the crime branch of Thane police, who have since handed him over to the Virar police who are carrying out further investigations into the case, police added.
