Two contract labourers die of asphyxiation at Rajarhat
Two siblings working under a contractor died of asphyxiation after entering a drain at Rajarhat in eastern part of the city today.
Nasim Ali Tarafdar and Alam Ali Tarafdar, in their early 30s, were declared 'brought dead' by the doctors of a nursing home at Baguiati, police said.
The duo, residents of Minakha of South 24 Parganas, had entered the manhole to clear silt near the DLF More under New Town police station around 0930 hours.
On failing to get any response from them, workers on the surface called the fire brigade which summoned the experts from the Disaster Management Group for rescue operation.
The DMG personnel broke the drain to expand it and then lifted the two in an unconscious state.
The two had no safety gear though cleaning underground is hazardous.
The New Town police detained the contractor for interrogation.
