More than 850 people deposited their licensed arms with the Thane police following the instructions given by the Election Commission (EC) in view of the upcoming Lok sabha elections, the district police informed media here.


Police sources informed that Thane Police commissionerate has issued notices to people with licensed arms following which around 850 locals with licensed arms deposited their arms under the Thane police commissionerate.

Interestingly,about 60 percent license holders are the political leaders of various political parties while some of them are the political office bearers of different rankings. Similarly, the Thane rural police also issued notices and accordingly 930 people have surrendered their weapons to the respective police stations.

Explaining about the exemption of a few exceptional cases, a police officer said those who seek exemption have to appeal before the scrutiny committee and only if the committee is convinced about the reason for keeping arms concerned people are excluded from surrendering their arms.
