Farmers of 36 villages in Surat district will intensify their protest against the state government's move to acquire their land for the proposed Hazira special investment region (SIR).

''The farmers are protesting against the SIR. We will launch a large movement against the government's step. We will not allow the government to take even a single inch land of the farmers,'' Jayesh Patel, secretary Guj Khedut Samaj, a group working for farmers' rights, said today. He said farmers of 36 villages of Olpad taluka and Choryasi taluka will meet today to decide their future course of action.

The farmers' move may create a problem for the BJP as the state will go for voting for the 26 Lok Sabha seats on April 30.

Mr Patel said on February 14 this year, the state government had issued a notification declaring its intention to implement Hazira SIR.

As per the notification, the government is planning to acquire around 24,143 hectares of land from the farmers of 36 villages of Olpad taluka and Choryasi taluka.

The Congress had earlier alleged that the SIR was a conspiracy by the BJP Government to hand over the precious land to some industrialists.
