Cong withdraws from race in Palghar LS seat, to support Thakur's BVA
In a last-minute surprise move, the Congress today decided to withdraw from the election fray in the Palghar Lok Sabha constituency and support Hitendra Thakur-led Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA).
It was since long the Congress was pondering over whether to go it alone or support the BVA nominee and finally had fielded state minister Rajendra Gavit for the seat. He was pitted against the sitting MP Baliram Jadhav of the BVA, while the third candidate in fray is the BJP-Shiv Sena nominee Chintaman Wanga.
However, with former MP and district Congress president Damoo Shingada revolting against the party decision to field Mr Gavit, he warned of the anti-party activities.
According to reports, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan favoured the candidature of Mr Gavit, but MPCC chief Manikrao Thakre was against it as he did not want any revolt within the party in the run-up to the LS elections. So he this afternoon decided to support the BVA nominee and not field its candidate, thus indicating that Mr Gavit is now out of race, sources added.
Meanwhile, Damoo Shingda and former minister Manisha Nimkar of the Shiv Sena filed their nominations as Independents for Palghar LS seat.
