EC tells Punjab Govt to recommend 3 names for DGP
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has told the Punjab Government to recommend names of three senior-most IPS officers for the selection of new Director General of Police (DGP) in the state.
DGP Sumedh Singh Saini, who sent a leave application and which was accepted by the ECI, had proceeded on leave.
The ECI will appoint the new DGP within a day or two from the panel of three IPS officers to be sent by the State government.
Punjab Congress unit was pressing for the transfer of the DGP on the plea that he had been chargesheeted in a criminal case. The Congressmen also accused him of favouring the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
Sangrur, Fazilka and Patiala Deputy Commissioners(DCs), Ludhiana Police Commissioner and four Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) were transferred by the ECI on Tuesday for allegedly favouring the ruling SAD-BJP alliance.
The state goes to poll on April 30.
