In order to conduct free, fair and peaceful elections, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack police commissionerate today requested the Centre to provide nine companies of Central Paramilitary Forces.


Commissioner of Police R P Sharma while interacting with the representatives of political parties and the mediapersons here said, if provided, 5 companies of CPMF would be deployed at Bhubaneswar and four companies at Cuttack.

Mr Sharma said efforts would be made to deploy maximum number of central paramilitary forces at booths. He said as per the instructions of the Election Commission of India, the Commissionerate of Police, has taken a series of steps to make the election free and fair. Mr Sharma said 65 cases were registered in Bhubaneswar and 56 in Cuttack for trading illegal liquor. As many as 5,700 foreign liquor and Aska 40 liquor bottles and more than 270 litres of country liquor were seized from Cuttack and Bhubaneswar during the last one month.

Similarly more than 100 habitual offenders and potential trouble makers were booked under section 110 of the CrPC during the last one month. As many as 542 NBWs in Bhubaneswar and 801 in Cuttack were executed during the period.

Mr Sharma said out of the total 1,596 armed license holders in Bhubaneswar 950 and out of 950 license holders in Cuttack 592 have already deposited their arms with the police so far.

Some armed license holders such as private security personnel and persons with the threat to their lives were given exemptions.

Mr Sharma directed all its personnel to act impartially and fearlessly particularly during campaigning and polling stages.

The upcoming Assembly election for Odisha will be held in April in two phases.

The first phase will be April 10 while the second phase has been scheduled for April 17.

The results of the polls will be announced on May 16.
