Congress today received a major setback, just before the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh scheduled on April 7, when party candidate from Gautam Buddha Nagar seat Ramesh Chandra Tomar today joined the BJP.

Tomar, the Congress candidate from GB Nagar, joined the BJP at New Delhi at the residence of party president Rajnath Singh, BJP spokesperson Vijay Bahadur Pathak confirmed.

Tomar's son Vikas has also confirmed about his father joining the BJP. Tomar is slated to address mediapersons later in the day.

With this new political development, Congress will go blank in Gautam Buddha Nagar seat, as the nomination process have been completed and the polling is in the first week on April 10.

Ramesh Chandra Tomar, former BJP MP, was earlier with the BJP but left the party in 2009 after Rajnath Singh contested elections from Ghaziabad seat.

Meanwhile, UP Congress media chairman Satyadev Tripathi, expressing his surprise over the incident, said such act shows the political greed of person and his outlook on the ideology and ethics.
