At the end of the Election Commission's campaign for the updating of voters list, 16 lakh new names have been added till March 31, Chief Electoral Officer Anita Karval said today.


Addressing a news conference here, Ms Karval said a total of 25.4 lakh new names were received for updating of the voters' list, out of which 9.2 lakh voters were shifting from one place to another.

Hence, the net figure of addition of the new names would come at 16 lakh voters, as on March 31.

She said the number of total voters in the state was 3.98 crore as on January 31.

Ms Karval said processing on the new names would be completed by April 10 and the final figure of total voters in the state would be available on that day.

She said total seven FIRs have been filed in various parts of the state in connection with the violation of the Model Code of Conduct.

Three FIRs have been filed in Mehsana of north Gujarat, one each in Kutch, Gandhinagar, Valsad and Rajkot, since the Model Code of Conduct for the Lok Sabha election came into force.

She said the Commission has received as many as 148 complaints regarding the violation of Model Code of Conduct, which include nine complaints from BJP, 29 from Congress, four from other parties and 106 complaints received either from general public or suo motu by the Commission.

Ms Karval further said that action has been taken on 94 complaints and the rest were under process.

Meanwhile, one Independent candidate filed his nomination papers today in Gandhinagar on the first day.

BJP has fielded party patriarch L K Advani from Gandhingar Lok Sabha constituency.

Congress has fielded Kirit Patel against Mr Advani.

Gujarat will go to single phase polling on April 30 for 26 Lok Sabha seats.
