Top Meghalaya rebels arrested in Kolkata
A top militant leader of a Meghalaya-based Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) and his aide were arrested by the special task force of Kolkata Police in West Bengal, police said today
Phyrnailang Swer alias Pastor, the area commander in-charge of Jaintia hills Phyrnailang Swer and his aide Nand Kishore Thakur were arrested by special task force of Kolkata Police after storming their hideout at Chittaranjan Avenue, East Khasi Hills district SP M Kharkhrang said.
Swer wanted in several criminal cases has remained elusive after he escaped from North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) hospital on July 17 last year.
Police had been on his lookout and with the help of state and central intelligence agencies he was finally traced in Kolkata.
"A team from Shillong police has left for Kolkata to bring both of them to Shillong for further investigation," Mr Kharkrang said.
Swer was first arrested in August 2004 along with eight others when they formed a new gang, styled as the Retrieval of Indigenous United Forum (RIUF).
He was put under MPDA and after release from detention he started working closely with HNLC.
