Building collapse: Rescue work called off

By John Edwards, Panaji, Jan 14 : Nearly 10 days after a partly constructed building collapsed in a Canacona village, search and rescue operation was called off om Tuesday.
The rescuers pulled out 16 persons alive and retrieved 31 bodies since Jan 4 when the building collapsed on labourers during lunch break hours.
Director of Fire and Emergency Services Ashok Menon confirmed that the rescue operation was called off at 3 pm.
"There are no more bodies lying in the ruins," he said.
The Goa Police have booked the two builders, a contractor and some government officers for culpable homicide, corruption and other charges.
Two government officers and the contractor have already been arrested while search for the rest is underway.
