Thane police today unearthed a major theft of diesel from the pipeline of the Bharat Petroleum at Dadlani Park area near the Balkum creek and launched a manhunt to arrest the culprits.

The sources in Kapurbawdi police, who are yet to register an offence in connection with the theft, said the pipline from Chembur to Manmad was punctured and a coupling fitted to it to dispense the diesel from the pipeline.

Just below the coupling, there was a huge pit dug up to store the diesel which was then transferred to tankers and stolen away and sold to the needy.

As the coupling attached to the pipeline broke today, the pit got filled and diesel started overflowing. This gave a bad odour in the vicinity and the people were alerted, police said.

The officials of the disaster Control Cell of the Thane Municipal Corporaiton (TMC) also rushed and called the police to the scene. Also summoned were the officials from the Bharat Petroleum, who arrived with four tankers.

Fortunately, there was no dwelling in the vicinity nearby and a major catastrophe was avoided.

According to the police, the theft of diesel was carried out unabated as the location was isolated. The personnel of the Bharat Petroleum were busy plugging the hole through which the dieseal was siphoned out.

Police are probing into the case of theft and are likely to register offence against unknown persons.

A manhunt has been launched to nab the members of oil mafia who stole away lakhs of litres of diesel, police added.
