Five parties, including the Janata Dal (United) and the Samjawadi Party, today announced formation of a joint front 'Pragatishil Manch' to take on the BJP and the Congress in Gujarat in the coming Lok Sabha polls.

The announcement in this regard by state units of these parties came a day before issuance of the notification for the election to 26 LS constituencies in the BJP-ruled state.

Adddressing a joint news conference here this afternoon, JD(U) Gujarat vice-president Govind Jadav said the economic policies of both the Congress and BJP were 'identical'.

'Even Gujarat model of Chief Minister Narendra Modi is a replica of the Congress' economic policies. Both the parties have failed to address the plight of tribals, dalits and farmers in the state,' Mr Jadav said.

He said the Front will field its candidates on 11 LS constituencies and two Assembly constituencies for which by-elections are being held simultaneously with the parliamentary elections.

Mr Jadav said the Front will launch its campaign in Gujarat with the slogan 'Congress hatao, BJP harao' (remove Congress, defeat BJP).

Meanwhile, SP's Gujarat unit chief Surendrasingh Yadav said Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav will address a public rally at Patan in north Gujarat on April 21.

He said other senior SP leaders like Mulayam Singh Yadav, Azam Khan and Jaya Bachchan too are likely to visit the state for campaigning of the candidates.

The state will go to the single phase polling on April 30.
