Congress pits Amarinder Singh against BJP's Arun Jaitley in Amritsar
Congress Party leader, Madhusudan Mistry has declared that former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh will take on BJP leader Arun Jaitley in the LOk Sabha electoral contest for Amritsar.
Announcing an additional list of 26 Congress candidates who will contest the polls,Mistry, a member of the Congress Election Coordination Committee, said the party has cleared the names of 26 candidates.
He also said that senior Congress leader and former minister Ambika Soni would contest the polls from the Anandpur Sahib parliamentary constituency.
"Congress President (Sonia Gandhi) and the members of the election committee have cleared the names of 26 Congress candidates in a meeting held on Friday. Ambika Soni will contest in place of Ravneet Singh Bittu from Anandpur Sahib, and Captain Amarinder will contest from Amritsar,"said Mistry.
Congress activists in Amritsar have welcomed the announcement of Captain Amarinder Singh contesting the polls, and came out onto the streets to celebrate.
They distributed sweets, burst firecrackers and danced in joy over the news.
A Congress worker, Gurjeet Ojla, said all Congress party members and workers were very excited to hear the news of Amarinder Singh's candidature from Amritsar.
"We came to know in the evening about the announcement of Captain Amarinder Singh as the Congress candidate from Amritsar. I can see so much excitement among the Congress workers, that I have never seen before", said Ojla.
Meanwhile, Arun Jaitley, representing the BJP, has already been declared as the party's candidate from Amritsar, replacing Navjot Singh Sidhu.
