Ahmedabad, Mar 18 : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday registered a Preliminary Enquiry (PE) against top ministers of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case.

According to reports, the CBI has recovered a 70-minute audio CD dated Nov 2011 which recorded the conversations of Modi's personal secretary GC Murmu, IAS officer AK Sharma, other ministers and police officials on derailing the investigations in the case.

Nineteen-year-old Ishrat was gunned down by the Gujarat Police along with Javed Ghulam Sheikh alias Pranesh Kumar Pillai, Amjad Ali alias Rajkumar Akbar Ali Rana and Jisan Johar Abdul Gani in Ahmedabad on June 15, 2004.

The police alleged that Ishrat and three others were Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants who conspired to assassinate Modi.
