David Brenner, a favorite comic on Johnny Carson's 'The Tonight Show', has passed away due to cancer. He was 78.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, his longtime publicist said in a statement that the veteran actor died peacefully at his home in NYC surrounded by his family.

Brenner had appeared on the late-night show 158 times, setting a record for most guest appearances.

Comedian Richard Lewis took to Twitter to pay tribute to the late star and said that Brenner was the king of 'hip, observational comedy' and his death has left an irreplaceable hole.
