Mamata names Mithun for Rajya Sabha seat

Kolkata, Jan 18 : West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday named Bollywood actor Mithun Chakraborty as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls in the state

West Bengal goes to poll for five Rajya Sabha seats on Feb 7.

Banerjee's TMC might field candidates in all the 5 seats for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in West Bengal.

"One of these seats will be given to Shri Mithun Chakraborty from All India Trinamool Congress," Banerjee said in a Facebook post.

She said, " Mithun Chakraborty is a well-known film personality. He has devoted his life to the cause of cultural and social activities with great success. He is an asset not only of West Bengal, but also of the entire country. We are proud to nominate him."

While the last date of filing nomination is on Jan 28, the notification will be published on Jan 21.

The terms for five existing MPs end on Apr 2.

Rajya Sabha elections for 55 seats will be held in the month of February, out of which 5 seats are from Bengal.
