MNS decides to contest Lok Sabha polls
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Sunday announced that his party will contest the upcoming 2014 Lok Sabha elections and released the first list of candidates.
MNS supremo also said that his party will support Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.
The party released the first list consisting seven candidates and the second list is also expected to be announced soon.
Filmmaker and actor Mahesh Manjrekar is one of the seven candidates.
This comes even after the BJP had asked Raj Thackeray not to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections or even if he does, then to put up minimum MNS candidates possible.
Senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari reportedly had a luncheon meeting with Raj Thackeray at a Mumbai hotel.
According to reports, Gadkari urged Raj Thackeray to make way for strengthening the BJP-Shiv Sena vote bank in Maharashtra.
"We don't want the Congress to benefit by the MNS which has the capability to divide anti-Congress votes. So we requested Raj Thackeray not to contest the general elections or if he does, put up candidates in minimum seats possible," Gadkari had told reporters.
"We also want Raj Thackeray to join the NDA, but for the moment he is not ready," he said.
