In a unique gesture, the West Bengal Government organised a gun salute for legendary actress Suchitra Sen before she was cremated at the Keoratola crematorium here on Friday afternoon.

One of the leading lights of both Bengali and Hindi cinema, Sen died at Kolkata's privately-run Belle Vue Clinic this morning of a heart attack. She was 82.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee officially announced Sen's death.

"The passing away of 'Mahanayika' (great actress), I feel in world cinema and in Bengali cinema is a big and sad news. Such a talent is born only once, and there is no parallel. Today, is extremely saddening for us. We have lost someone important today," said Mamata

She also said that Ms Sen's family had requested that they be allowed to carry out her last rites in peace.

Sen was admitted to the Belle Vue Clinic on December 23 and was being treated for a respiratory tract infection. In the last couple of days she was placed on ventilator support.

Sen began her acting career with the unreleased Bengali film "Shesh Kothai" in 1952

Her other famous films included Bimal Roy's Devdas (1955) and Gulzar's Aandhi (1975).

In Bengali cinema, she took part in hits such as Harano Sur, Sagarika, Chaowa Paowa, Agnipariksha, Dweep Jele Jaai and Uttar Falguni.

She turned a recluse in 1978 after the failure of her film Pronoy Pasha.

Sen was married to Dibanath Sen, the scion of one of Kolkata's most prominent business families. She is survived by her daughter Moon Moon and grand daughters Raima and Riya, all three actresses.
