New Delhi, Jan. 17 Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) meet on Friday said that the Congress had taken a lot of steps to ensure power to the people and that the Right To Information Act (RTI) was one of them. ANI | 2 years ago

"We restored information and information is power. Through the RTI, we gave power to the people of this country. We gave information that was robbed off in government offices," said Gandhi.

"It was a big step that we took. Nobody pressurized us to bring in the RTI but the Congress party stood up, and said that we needed to do this to give every person in the country the right to know what is going on," he said.

"We are first government to take action, and say that the money belongs to the public, and it needs to be put in their account. We did it knowing that it will enable people to get their benefits and entitlement," he added.

He also said that the Congress played a vital role in transforming the Panchayati Raj system

"We transformed Panchayati Raj system; MNREGA transferred power to people and we constructed and reinforced that pillar. Would like to thank Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar for it as he was the one to stand by this," he said.
