In an attempt to woo Muslim voters ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh said he was ready to apologise for any past mistakes.

Hinting at the anti-Muslim 2002 Gujarat riots, Singh said: "Give us a chance. If we have made a mistake in the past, I apologise for it. In future if we make a mistake, I assure you, we will bow our heads before you."

"If we don't live up to your expectations, don't look at us ever again. But try us once," Singh told a gathering of Muslims here.

The infamous Gujarat riots of 2002 left hundreds of Muslims dead, injured and tortured and came as a blot in the BJP rule in the state.

The riots followed an incident of train burning in Godhra in which Hindus returning from Ayodhya were killed by a Muslim mob.
