Sri Lanka opened their Asia Cup campaign with a 12-run victory over Pakistan here on Tuesday.

Chasing Sri Lanka's 296 for six, Pakistan were all out for 284 in 48.5 overs.

Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga delivered a fiery spell to take 52 for five and restricted Pakistan to 284 in the thrilling encounter .

Sri Lanka kept picking up Pakistani wickets at crucial junctures which helped their cause at the end.

Skipper Misbah-ul-Haq (73) and Umar Akmal (74) added 121 runs in the fifth wicket partnership as Pakistan was slowly inching towards the target.

Suranga Lakmal, however, brought back Sri Lanka in the game by picked up Akmal in the 43rd over.

Pakistan lost the wickets of Shahid Afridi (4), Misbah and Umar Gul (2) quickly to get reduced to 262 for 8 at the end of 47th over.

Bilawal Bhatti (18) and Saeed Ajmal (10) tried their best with their 19 runs ninth wicket stand but Sri Lankan bowlers hold their nerves to win the match.

Earlier, Sri Lanka scored 296 for six in their 50 overs.

Lahiru Thirimanne top scored for Sri Lanka with his 110-ball 102 runs. he smashed 11 boundaries and six in his knock.

Thirimanne and former Sri Lanka skipper Kumara Sangakkara (67)struck an Asia Cup record second wicket partnership of 161 runs.

Skipper Angelo Mathews later hit a quick fire unbeaten knock of 55 runs off 50 balls to take his side to a competitive 296.
