Kolkata, Feb 24 : West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday unveiled the headquarters of the West Bengal Police at Bhawani Bhawan in south Kolkata.
The Bhawani Bhawan in Alipur will house the WB Police headquarters where the DGP and his senior officials will have offices. Barring the police departments, all other offices in Bhawani Bhawan like that of Human Rights, PWD, and other government departments will be shifted elsewhere.
The chief minister after unveiling the office said the police directorate now can concentrate more to maintain law and order in the state.
She said the Kolkata Police has its own headquarters at Lal Bazar and now the WB Police has its own place.
The West Bengal Police is one of the two police forces of the state.
The other is the Kolkata Police, which has a separate jurisdiction.
The West Bengal Police has jurisdiction concurrent with the eighteen revenue districts of the state (excluding the metropolitan city of Kolkata) which comprises one of the two general police districts of West Bengal as under the Police Act 1861.
Banerjee said the DGP, who also sits at Nabanna, the state secretariat, will spend two to three hours here every day.
