Coca-Cola Cup begins in West Bengal tomorrow

By Manik Banerjee, Kolkata, Feb 23 : West Bengal leg of the Coca-Cola school cricket championship, the only cricket tournament for the school students of th country, begins in the state Monday with leading under-16 school cricket teams from Kolkata and 18 major districts of the state joining the fray for the top honours.

The Coca- Cola cricket championship is a U-16 inter school cricket grass root levele cricket initiative to discover budding cricket talents in the country.

The program is open to all young cricketrs in the age group of 12-16 years. The tournament is being played in ten states and cities in over 70 districts involving more that 12,500 youngs players from more than 800 schools in the country.

The phase one of the West Bengal leg of the championship commences on Monday. The winners of the 18 districts along with two top teams from Kolkata will qualify into phase two where it will be played on knock-out basis.

The winners from each state will play in the inter-state challenge round.

While the champions and runners up team in each state will receive rupees fifty thousand and rupees twentyfive thousand as prize mone, the winners and second best team in the inter-state challenge will get a purse of rupees one lakh and rupees seventyfive thousand respectively.

Apart from West Bengal other states and cities involved in this competition include Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Baroda, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

According to Dilip Jayaram, CEO of Procam international, the sport management company, which is organising the championship in collaboration the respective state cricket body, efforts are being made to arrange cricket matches between champion team of Coca -Cola cup and champion school team from either England or Sri Lanka.

Former test cricleter and current national selector S Saba Karim. The mentor of this championship said, "It is nice that all India inter-school is back with lots of enthusiasm. Hope there would be very good competition during the state as well as inter state level of the championship".
