Kolkata, Jan 17 : Iconic Bengali actress Suchitra Sen, who died on Friday in a Kolkata hospital, will be given a gun salute at her funeral, announced West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

According to reports, she will be cremated on a sandalwood pyre at Keoratola crematorium here later on Friday.

Sen, who remained away from public life for nearly three and half decades, died on Friday. She was 83.

"At around 8-25 am in the morning she died from a cardiac arrest. I think her death is very sad news for us. It is a big loss and a day of great sorrow. We are devastated. She wanted her last rites peacefully. I want your cooperation so that she can be cremated without any problem," said Mamata Banerjee after reaching the hospital.

"She was a wonder. She was not just a legend. She could keep herself away from limelight like this," said Banerjee.

Sen, whom almost none had seen for decades after she retired from films in 1978, was admitted to Belle Vue Clinic in Kolkata with respiratory tract infection on Dec 24.
