Sri Krishna Leelotsav to be celebrated in Udupi from Aug 21

Udupi, Aug 11 : Sri Krishna Leelotsav, as part of Krishna Janmashtami, the significant annual events to be held in this temple town will be celebratred at the famous Sri Krishna temple here on August 21 and 22.

Giving the details about the festival, Sri Laxmivara Thirtha Swamiji of Paryaya Shiroor Mutt today said as part of the festival, a ten-day religious and cultural programmes would be held.

This include competitions, dance, drama, music concerts, religious discourses and painting exhibitions. A folk sports meet had also been arranged on August 14.

He said 'India in Cow', a documentary on the importance of preservation of cow breeds directed by Vasantha Rao will be released by the Swamiji on the occasion. On August 21 (on Janmashtami) Sri Krishna Janmashtami competitions will be inaugurated during which Sri Krishna Janmashtami awards will be presented.

The Seer said as a special attraction to the festival, world famous drummer Shivamani and his troupe will give their performance on August 22 (Sri Krishna Leelotsav day).

On the Janmashtami day, 'Arghya', offering milk and water to the specially made clay idol of Lord Sri Krishna at the sanctorum of the temple will be held at midnight followed by 'Sri Krishna Leelotsav' on the next day in which a colourful procession of the presiding deity will be held in the afternoon in which several fancy and folk and cultural troupes will participate, he said.

The pontiff said a special 'Tiger dance' competition had also bee arranged besides other fancy and folk dances for which a total of Rs eight lakh cash prizes had been kept apart. He said 1.5 lakh 'Chakkuli' (a fried snack) and 75,000 'laddus' will be prepared and offered to the presiding deity on Janmastami later which will be distributed to the visiting devotees and 32,000 students from 132 schools in Udupi coming under mid-day meal scheme of the mutt, he added.
