Kolkata, Jan 20: A two-day state level Army Postal Service (APS) philatelic exhibition 'Rising Sun Philex-2012' concluded at the Army Public School, Ballygunge complex, here today.
The exhibition showcased rare collection of philatelic materials by avid collectors comprising school children and defence personnel from city and adjoining areas.
Over 2,000 school children from Army Public School and Kendriya Vidyalaya, defence personnel and their families visited the exhibition.
The exhibition is held annually at various locations in the country by the Army Postal Service Corps. Workshop for students on philately and stamp designing competition was also held at the venue.
GOC Bengal Area, Maj Gen KS Kumbar praised the efforts of the Central Base Post Office (CBPO) Commanding Officer Col AK Pandey for hosting the event that displayed over 100 frames.
Students contributed a significant part of the stamp collection.
'First Day' covers of important ceremonial events and reunions of various army formations were also displayed reliving military history.
The beginning of an Indian Army Postal Organisation was made in 1856 when the first post office was sent to Persia for the exclusive use of a field force. Between 1856 and 1913 Field Post Offices accompanied the forces to many frontier campaigns and expeditions. During the two World Wars APS served in the far-flung theatres of war in Europe, Africa and Asia.
Since Independence APS has become a permanent part of the Army with added responsibilities for Air Force and official mail. Previously non-combatants, APS personnel are now trained and armed as regular soldiers and serve in Corps of their own. (UNI)
