Greater Mysore constitution on cards

Mysore, Jan 17 : Royal city of Mysore will be more than double its current area to 298 sq km once the Karnataka government approves the constitution of Greater Mysore.

The enlarged city, which is currently having an area of 128.42 sq km, would have a city corporation of 100 wards as against 65 at present with additional 41 villages under 18 gram panchayats brought under its fold.

The local body would have ample scope to generate and raise revenue for improved governance and provision of civic amenities to facilitate planned development of Mysore.

All the 18 gram panchayats have consented for their incorporation into Greater Mysore and government go-ahead preceded by a public debate is essential for its final approval.

Mysore district in-charge and Minister S A Ramdas told UNI that the industrial areas of Metagalli and Hootagalli as well as the highly urbanised villages, such as Hinkal, were already being served by the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) though the revenue by way of tax went to the local gram panchayat.

However, the gram panchayats were also unable to realise the revenue or resources due from industries in the absence of guidelines or laws on taxation. (UNI)
