Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 17 : A 'Deep Sea Fishing' project aimed at reducing fishing around inshore waters and increasing fish catch from deep sea, was inaugurated by Kerala fisheries minister K Babu at Poovar fishing village near here today.
Inaugurating the project, the minister said it was aimed at diverting the excess number of fishing crafts operating in the inshore waters to offshore waters.
The project is being implemented by Department of Fisheries through the Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation Limited, he said.
The minister said the project could help sustainable utilization of available resources from offshore waters and socio-economic development of traditional fishermen.
Pointing out that marine fish production in Kerala was stagnant for the last few years, he said the Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE) from the inshore area was diminishing due to over investment and higher fishing pressure by both mechanized and motorized sector. (UNI)
