21 dead in Sikkim and Rajasthan as weather plays havoc

Gangtok/Jaipur, Jun 24 : Atleast 14 people were killed in a landslide in Sikkim and seven lost their lives in rain related incidents in Rajasthan.

At least 14 people were killed due to landslides in three areas of West Sikkim last night.

Superintendent of Police A K Singh, West Sikkim said at least 14 people of four families were killed in three separate areas of Lower Pelling, Kurung and Tikjuk.

All essential services have been disrupted following the landslides, the SP informed.

Seven people lost their lives in rain-related incidents in Rajasthan yesterday as monsoon fury inundated many low lying pockets in Baran, Chhabra and Atru towns in Kota division of the state.

According to reports reaching the state headquarters, five people died in an incident of house collapse in Baran town where the life was thrown out of gear following heavy downpour(29 cm) till last evening.

One person died after falling into a water filled pit in Kota which reported wide spread rains during past two days.

In the state capital here, one stall owner was electrocuted and another man sustained injuries when a broken live wire fell on a stall in Banipark area, police said.

The Meteorology office has issued heavy rain warning for many places in South Eastern districts during next 48 hours.

Life in the Hadouti Circle of Rajasthan was limping back to normal following incessant rain in past 48 hours.

Normalcy was restored at most of the places since this morning following a let-up in rainfall.

Two dozen villagers were stranded due to flowing of water in Nagda village near Kalisindh river. However, they have been rescued safely.

However, the national capital reeled under the hot and muggy weather, expecting the Southwest monsoon to arrive here in the next five days.

The maximum temperature for the day was recorded at 38.7 degrees Celsius, a notch above normal for the season, the weatherman said.

"Though the maximum temperature was under 40 degrees, high humidity of 79 per cent left people sweating," he said.

The minimum temperature stayed at 30 degrees, three notches above normal for the season.

According to the Met office, there are chances of rain tomorrow with little changes in the mercury level.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted the monsoon to hit the Capital between June 27 and 29. (UNI -Posted on / )
