Bangalore, Jan 4 : A six-member team led by Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) Director General V K Bahuguna will begin the tour mineral rich Bellary and other iron ore mining areas in Karnataka from today to prepare a rehabilitation plan for the affected and to arrest any further adverse impact on environment due to mining operations.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of inauguration of Woods Museum cum Interpretation Centre set up at the Institute of Wood Science and Technology here, Mr Bahuguna said that on request by the Karnataka Government, a team will be visiting the iron ore mining areas in the state for assessing problems for rehabilitation.

''We will be coming out with a report suggesting rehabilitation of both affected due to mining as well as to avoid adverse impact on the environment if mining was allowed to continue beyond a limit,'' he added.

Replying to a question, he said there are about 120 mines to be studied and cannot have any time frame for submitting the report.

''We will be preparing a model rehabilitation plan at the earliest and submiting to the State Government,'' he added.

To begin with, the team is visiting Bellary today.

The Supreme Court, which is hearing illegal iron ore mining case had also asked the ICFRE to study the impact on environment. (UNI)
