Charles and Diana wedding cake fetches £1k at auction

London, Aug 28 : A 27-year-old piece of wedding cake from the marriage of the Prince of Wales Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales has fetched 1,000 pounds at an auction.

The cake piece was originally given to Moyra Smith, a member of the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's household at Clarence House, who preserved the topping in cling film and kept it in a metal tin.

The nine-inch square piece of icing and marzipan, bought by an anonymous buyer, has the royal coat-of-arms and is coloured in gold, silver, red and blue.

"To my knowledge this is the highest price for any slice of the cake sold at auction," the Telegraph quoted auctioneer Nathan Winter, as saying.

The auction organised by Dominic Winter Book Auctions in South Cerney, near Cirencester, Gloucestershire also includes the letter from the Prince and Princess of Wales thanking Mrs Smith for contributing to a clock given as a wedding present, and a bottle of royal heritage beer produced to mark the birth of Prince William in 1982.

Mrs Smith's husband Douglas had brought in a number of royal items for auction

"She was very sentimental about the cake. She loved the Royal family and looked back with great fondness," said Douglas

An autographed letter written by the Princess also raked in 660 pounds while a Christmas card from 1994 signed and inscribed to "Manuela" went for 620 pounds.
